Army Redeployed, RG Rigging - Tsvangirai

Tsvangivote1PM and Mrs Tsvangirai voting in Harare today in a referendm that is supposed to put Zimbabwe on the road to a democratic election. Early indications are that the Yes Vote is 20 times the No Vote.

There has apparently been another deployment of senior military officers around the country ahead of the referendum and elections, exposing a refusal by President Robert Mugabe's side of the government to change despite three years of Inclusive Government.

MDC-T Mbare Man Attacked On Camera

zvorwadza2MDC-T Mbare candidate Sten Zvorwadza was attacked together with a BBC crew that was covering his campaign in the volatile suburb.

Although he escaped uninjured and reported the attack at the local police station,  no report was taken and the Zanu-PF supporters who attacked him while campaigning for a "Yes" vote in the referendum are still free.

Makarau Urged To Fire ZEC Secretariat

makarauZimbabwe Democracy Institute (ZDI) has recommended that the newly sworn-in Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) chair, Justice Rita Makarau, fire the chief elections officer, Lovemore Sekeramayi, who directed the secretariat in the sham 2008 harmonised election.

ZDI director Pedzi Ruhanya said in Harare today, the largely unchanged Commission and secretariat that passed the sham 2002 to 2008 elections as free and fair was incapable of delivering a democratic election. Polling station locations (open with excel)

MachisaZimRights Director Okay Machisa has been taken off remand by a High Court Judge over forgery and fraud charges brought by the Zimbabwe Republic Police in January - which should hopefully open the way for his organisation being allowed to monitor the referendum and election.

ZimRights is a pioneering organisation in the field of election monitoring and its barring by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) would deprive the process of experienced election monitors and reduce the credibility of the referendum and election. Latest reports are that ZimRights has now been accredited

Zanu PF is guilty of many things – the collapse of the economy, the genocide of Ghukurahundi and the wholesale destruction of homes in Murambatsvina.Everybody recognises these as gross human rights abuse and crimes against humanity. But when their outlandish actions are associated with, not only the ruthless pursuit of their political ends but also with wholesale theft and lawlessness, then we need to sit up and take notice.

Ban on Observers is 'Only a Zanu (PF) Wish'

Recent announcements by Vice-President Joyce Mujuru and the Foreign Minister Simbarashe Mbengegwi that foreign observers would not be allowed for the referendum and election were just expressions of their wishes as Zanu (PF) members.

In reality no single party can decide this, and so far the Principals have not agreed a position, said Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai yesterday.
