"Fadza Customer Above: Mandishona (2nd from left) and son Tererai (12) selling a bagful of mealie-cobs to a customer at Oxord yesterday David Mwanaka, the London farmer we recently reported as pioneering growing of white maize in the UK, has got some competition. Make way for Bernhard Mandishona-Svosve who has started flogging his first crop of mealie-cobs at any Zimbabwean gathering he can find in the UK. Mandishona goes to church-gatherings, weddings club meetings or any gathering which brings together Zimbabweans whose appetite for the cobs is well known. Like most Zimbabwean he grew up on subsistence farming, but he says his family was particularly successful at it. So when he had to think of a sideline besides his Monday to Friday job in the UK, farming came to mind, but without land, he thought he might not be able to do it. But soon enough he discovered he could lease land, then he had to start worrying about what varieties of maize he could grow in the British climate. Without wanting to divulge too much he said the variety produces smaller grains but it can rippen to a "good solid cob which you can cook and enjoy." |

BUDIRIRO - Residents here today expressed their anger at the commission running the City of Harare and took to the streets armed with bucketfuls of raw sewerage and litter which they poured at the District Office. Police in the area were caught unawares and failed to stop the angry residents numbering about 200 who demanded the immediate holding of elections, the quick repair of burst sewer and pipes, and the regular collection of refuse. The demonstration, dubbed Save Budiriro, Let the D.O. Taste It, started at Budiriro One Shopping Centre. The demonstrators went around the shopping centre carrying their buckets full of sewer and held up placards denouncing the commission running the affairs of Harare. Some of the placards read: Repair Burst Sewer Pipes, We Want Elections Now! And Let the District Officer Taste It while others demanded the immediate sacking of the Sekesai Makwavarara-led commission. When the residents got to the Budiriro District Office, they littered the place with the garbage and the raw sewerage and left dozens of fliers that read: "As residents we are disgusted by the continued presence of raw sewage in our community as a result of a non-functional sewerage system. It is a health hazard which cannot be allowed to continue. "We therefore as ratepayers demand v (very) immediate repair of burst sewage pipes, v immediate cleaning and collection of refuse, v immediate provision of rubbish bins at each household, v regular collection of refuse bins. Our children cannot continue to swim in and to drink raw sewerage. Let the District Officer taste it." The demonstrators chanted, shouted and sang revolutionary songs denouncing Local Government Minister Ignatius Chombo and his puppet commission running the affairs of Harare. Harare commissioners are Professor Jameson Kurasha, Sekesai Makwavarara, Tendai Savanhu, a Zanu PF central Committee member, Prisca Mupfumira, Zanu PF Central Committee member, Musavaya Reza, the Provincial Administrator, Engineer Noel Muzuva, and Richard Mahachi. |

Delegates to the Birmingham Assembly All is now set for the MDC UK External Congress - historic in that this it is the first time external structures have been recognised in the same way as provinces at home - and campaigning has gone into top gear. Besides getting the funds together for national representatives to come and officiate, the co-ordinating committee now headed by Northampton Branch chairman Rodwell Mupungu, has been grappling with technical issues regarding the voting. The final resolution on the voting procedures was that voting would be by secret ballot by accredited delegates to the congress who are the branch executives, rather than block votes by branches. |

David Mwanaka For our readers in the UK fresh white maize starts selling tomorrow Thursday 7 September at Mwanaka Fresh Farm Foods farm in North London and deliveries to some cities have already started. So if you are home-sick for some real chibage this is the time, and there are some added products this year including sweet potatoes and ground nuts, but you have to go to Bulls Cross Ride, Enfield, North London (EN7 5HS) or if you are far from there, you can club together with others and send some to pick up your orders. An excited Mr David Mwanaka told ChangeZimbabwe yesterday that maize was now ready and that from today for every £100 you spend on maize he will give you back £10 cash plus maize worth £5 if you came to pick from farm. This most enterprising young farmer who started farming in London when other farmers were being thrown off the land in Zimbabwe said selling of maize was starting tomorrow and would go on everyday from 11:30am to 6:30pm. He also gave some indicative prices: fresh white maize, £10 per dozen, pumpkins £2 - £4 a pumpkin, all green vegetables £2 a bundle, fresh groundnuts £3 a bag (650g), sweet potatoes £3/KG and cultured milk £2.50 for 1 litre. White maize meal is also available and prices vary as it is from different suppliers. |

Defiance - we are going ahead HARARE - Security forces have vowed to ruthlessly crush the planned September 13 ZCTU protests aimed at forcing government to review the minimum monthly wages to $90,000 (£75 at parallel market rates). Police spokesman Andrew Phiri said police would not allow the labour body to make the country ungovernable through street protests warning any such action will be ruthlessly quashed. It is illegal to engage in such acts without police clearance, Phiri said adding that the ZCTU is warned against such action. But secretary general Wellington Chibebe said the trade union would not be deterred by such threats and protests would go ahead as planned, with or without police clearance. He said the people had suffered enough and can no longer take it any more. From Monday the word would go out to the union’s 300,000 members to be ready for protests on September 13. The labour union, which is closely aligned to the main opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) has been threatening mass action for several months. |

MDC Council made up of activists Yesterday MDC President Morgan Tsvangirai led opposition party’s national executive in a street march to Parliament, possibly signalling the beginning mass action which the party has promised to force the government to negotiate an exit for the President. The march was billed as one to go and present to Speaker of Parliament and Zanu PF national chairman John Nkomo, a petition expressing solidarity with the suffering people of Zimbabwe. After a routine national executive meeting, President Tsvangirai, vice President Ms Thokozani Khupe, secretary-general Mr Tendai Biti, and the entire leadership, dubbed the Liberation Team, took their placards and headed for Parliament to present party’s roadmap to the speaker. The MDC UK is also planning a solidarity demonstration. |
